Creation of the structural base

Start by using an old balloon hat or make a mold of your head with adhesive tape and cellophane paper. This will serve as the "mannequin head" to ensure the hat fits you. If you choose to transform an existing wide-brimmed hat, cut the central brim and keep the top (crown) to serve as support

Cutting the main pieces in EVA Foam

Using a 5mm EVA sheet (or 2mm for more details and flexibility), draw and cut the shape of the back part of the hat (the part that resembles a shell or large hood) and the cut front brim. Furina has a design that blends a mustache and horns in the front; cut these pieces separately in 2mm EVA to allow for tight curves

Shaping and heating

Use the heat gun to heat the EVA foam. Work from 15cm to 20cm away, moving the air constantly to avoid burning the material. Fold the material to create the rounded shape of the back of the hat. Use protective gloves to shape the material while it is hot

Gluing and assembly

Apply hot glue generously to the contact edges. Join the back part with the sides. If using contact cement, apply it to both surfaces, wait for it to dry until "tacky" and then join them. This creates a much stronger bond than hot glue alone for large areas. Glue the "horns" and front details

Sealing and Painting

To prevent the EVA from absorbing the paint and having a "lighter" texture, apply 3 to 4 layers of Mod Podge, white glue diluted in water, or a specific sealer spray. Let dry completely between each layer. Then, paint with the base spray (usually black or dark navy blue depending on the version: Ousia or Orth). Use golden acrylic paint for the ornate details. Apply the gold with a dry brush to highlight the textures
