This weekend I accompanied Hannah Black to the Fashion District to hunt down fabric for her costume.
The Los Angeles Fashion District is a sprawling 90 blocks, 4,500 apparel and accessory lines, more than 1,000 stores divided into little sections like the Flower District, Menswear District and Santee Alley.
The area I visited is more of the fabric section that intersects roughly at Olympic & Maple streets. Head in any direction from these streets and you'll find storefronts upon storefronts of fabric, beads and accessories. If you have time, I suggest trying out different areas of the District. If you have a few hours and are a cosplayer - I suggest heading to the fabric side near Olympic/Maple.
This can be an intense workout so wear comfortable shoes - you'll be walking a lot. The best prices and widest selection of fabrics are here but you'll have to hunt them down. Dress comfortably. Walking shoes and bring cash. You can definitely bargain here and cash talks better than credit cards.
For many of y'all coming to Los Angeles Convention Center for either Anime Expo or Comikaze Expo, the Fashion District - well, at least Olympic & Maple St. is about a 20 minute walk from the convention center.
If driving here, find a flat rate lot - usually $4-$7 depending on day of week and time of day. Skip the parking meters unless you know exactly what you are looking for. It is $4 a hour to park.
BTW ; go to the bathroom before coming here. Public bathrooms are hard to find.
Any tips or helpful suggestions ? Feel free to share them in the comments !
