dual purpose video! had to re-edit because of time requirements. update as of 4/25/20: **I WON BEST INTERMEDIATE OVERALL COSPLAY!**
since my spring convention had to be cancelled, the cosplay directors and staff elected to have a virtual contest instead! so here is my video submission for the contest: Obsidian. they are a mega fusion of the main protagonists from Steven Universe: Steven, Garnet (by way of Ruby and Sapphire) Pearl and Amethyst. I know it's technically a spoiler if you've never seen Season 5, and I know she's only seen in one single episode, and briefly mentioned twice in Steven Universe Future, but there aren't that many Obsidian cosplayers out there. I found maybe 8 total on Instagram when researching for the cosplay.
naturally, because of the rarity of this cosplay, there's a lack of tutorials, patterns, or how-to's. so of course, i documented everything over the past three months, and will be bringing that to you in a mini series here soon, because it's 40GB worth of footage.
for now, enjoy the contest entry. i'll have more pics on social media as well and i'm happy to answer whatever questions you have and include them in a FAQ for the series too. here's some general info that everyone has asked:
--headpiece is all 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm foam from TNT Cosplay Supply. it weighs 8.5 pounds in total and is hollow inside. it goes on my head like a helmet, and is not uncomfortable at all (think women who walk with books on their head, i used to do that for fun)
--arms are made from pool noodles and quilt batting
--hands are made from 6mm foam and quilt batting
--boot covers are made from 10mm foam (yaya han's brand, i ran out of TNT's) and kneecaps are made from 6mm foam (TNT scraps i had) both covered in fabric
--fabric is bamboo 4way stretch, from etsy
--lashes were a gift, but i believe they came from amazon.
--facepaint is Mehron Paradise Storm Cloud, mixed with black. full makeup i will detail in a different video
--contacts from honeycolor
--sword is made from 10 mm foam from Yaya Han's brand, ribbon, PVC pipe, and magnets
--second face also has orange satin that was dyed (originally white) and a magnetic closure. there's a hidden hinge so the face can lift for the sword to go in/out
--orange "lava" detail on the fabric was also originally white; bra strap elastic that i ordered from an etsy seller overseas
--Steven's clothes are not on the second left hand; this is a detail i know about for sure, but because i needed help in getting this footage in a timely fashion, i didn't get to add it like i wanted. when i have my full photoshoot with my photographer, it will be there.
--video filmed with assistance from a friend and safe social distancing in place, using a selfie stick and zoom functions to maintain 6 feet of space. we are still able to visit parks in my city for exercise/walking. no one said i couldn't be a 7 foot 8 armed giant woman when i walked tho ;)
