Cosplay Contest: Beginner for Mainstage/Runway/Craftsmanship
what's good? how ya doin? it's ya girl Dee back with another video.
convention season is upon us, so i am a little remiss on my regular uploads. however now that my main cosplay competition is over, i wanted to share the process since i'm one of the very few people out there who's done a version of Sailor Moon in this manner. also, rather than doing a screengrab of an hour's worth of instagram footage again, i decided to just do a talkthrough with various pictures that i took throughout the process, as it's mandatory to show some work in progress for the contest.
i got the inspiration from a swimsuit that the Quirk Shop had, a transformation one in their anime series, that had the ribbons and sparkles strewn about the one piece suit. i first saw the suit back in the summer of 2018 and stated it would be awesome to do a cosplay based on that. in researching it, i saw that there were a small handful of transformation/henshin based cosplays for Sailor Moon. but none of the picked the particular moment, with wings, and how the ribbons are wrapped around her torso, like me.
the wings i already had on hand from Sausomecon 2018. however i did make upgrades to the harness to ensure that they would be more secure, by adding 4 D-rings to help hold them in place, and disguised the clasps with additional feathers.
i made the base for the ribbon suit from simplicity's 8286 pattern, with a modified v-neck collar. i followed all directions for it except adding elastic in the thighs, and i actually split the suit at the crotch and rear to lay it out flat to lay the ribbon suit on top of it, and fused it all together.
the ribbon suit is made of a metallic woven fabric, a lame' is what i'm told it is. it frayed very easy, and i went through quite a bit of interfacing to help secure it. (and maybe a smidge of masking tape on the edges.) i cut the fabric into 3.5 inch strips, hemmed those and then layered them together around a 5 inch diameter circular cut of fabric, and stemmed everything else from there. the bow was made from Momo Kurimi Cosplay's pattern and tutorial, and the brooch purchased from an etsy provider. it was a ton of trying the suit on and then pinning things in place, and then taking it off and stitching those pins together.
the galaxy bodysuit was made from mccall's M7269 bodysuit pattern, with a modified v-neck collar to suit my liking. i followed all directions for that as well. however before sewing it together, i used purple fabric dye, and then pink, purple and white fabric paint to give it a galaxy look. i added glitter fabric paint spray as well.
the gloves and shoes were made from a pattern i created from scratch using the duct tape/saran wrap method. the shoes were flats that i covered with fabric.
the wig was purchased from amazon, already fully assembled, and dyed with rit dye more synthetic dye. the formula called for 1/3 cup of pink and 2 tablespoons of red for 3 gallons of water, but i factored the dye content down to what was needed for just a one gallon pan.
makeup is mehron paradise EVERYTHING. (light pink, brilliant fuchsia, white, and some from their pastel pallette.) eyeshadow is from bh cosmetics (take me back to brazil, aurora lights) eyebrows are kat von d's brow pomade in purple, lipstick is fenty beauty unlocked. somewhere in there is a highlight from fenty as well, her kilawatt in wattabrat. my lashes were some clearance sparkle ones from sephora. i didn't stain but i did have pink in my ear for a few days simply cause i didn't see it. my practice run of facepaint took about an hour and a half, the day of the convention i got full facepaint, eyeshadow, lashes and lipstick done in an hour FLAT. (funny what happens when you run late lol)
the only thing that i would have done different was sew some wig combs in the wig, my hair was enough to secure it but you can still see my natural hair from the rear. i ran out of time to add the combs before the contest since i had a major event happen the day before the convention.
the twirling ribbon i bought from amazon. i unfortunately had to get a pack of 12 to get the particular shade of pink that i wanted, but it was worth it in the end.
all in all, 14 weeks roughly of hard work (between the wing assembly last year and starting in january up until a day or two before the convention.)
i will upload a full review of NakaKon here soon, as it was my first one. but overall, i had an amazing time, and i'm so humbled by everyone who supported or appreciated this cosplay.
